Three centuries of dance and virtuosity: from Baroque to groove!

Bach to groove is a thrilling voyage through diverse musical styles, in which the cello reveals itself turn and turn about as intimate, virtuosic, passionate, daring, and exhilarating. With three works, each inspired by a very different choreographic world, this programme also illustrates three ways of building society, a place where various generations and social backgrounds come together. It shows how music accompanies, reflects, and transforms relationships among people over the ages.

The Suite No. 2 for solo cello by Bach immerses us in the refined world of 18th-century courtly dance: that aristocratic art form whose every movement obeys precise rules. In palatial halls glittering with gold-framed mirrors, dance becomes a language of distinction and propriety. Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Minuet and Gigue revolve in timeless elegance, crowning the cello as undisputed king of movement.

There follows a further Suite for solo cello, this one by Gaspar Cassadó, who beckons us into an atmosphere of popular dance. A soundscape of Spanish alleyways springs to life, each piece hot on the heels of the last, now romantic and languorous, now fiery and electrifying. In a blaze of Catalan passion and sensuality, dance is swept beyond ordered protocol, becoming spontaneous, collective, and convivial, uniting an entire community in a single shared momentum.

We finish our journey with modern vibes, in Popsuite by the contemporary French composer Fabrice Bollon. Here we have a series of encore pieces, whose urban beat and irresistible groove burst open the boundaries of classical music, generating earth tremors of jubilant energy. In a cross-over of jazz-rock, reggae and hard rock, this virtuosic composition revolutionises the classical image of the cello. Such music is also a reflection of modern life: a time when generations create their own meeting spaces, where styles converge, blend and invent new ways of living together.
